Professor Tom O’Dowd

Professor Tom O’Dowd is a Theme Director of Growing Up in Ireland. In this role he co-directs the health and health utilisation theme with Prof. Richard Layte.

Tom O’Dowd has practiced as a General Practitioner in both the UK and Ireland and is currently a partner in a general practice in Tallaght. He has held academic posts in medical schools in Cardiff, Nottingham and since 1993 has been Professor of General Practice and head of the department of Public Health and Primary Care in Trinity College Dublin.

He chaired the Education and Training Committee of the Medical Council (1999 – 2004) and was involved in producing reports to the public on the state of medical education and which have led to the setting up of a Government commission on the future of medical education. He chaired the Association of Departments of General Practice in Ireland (1996 – 2004) which has led to improved funding of academic primary care.

His early research interests focussed on clinical microbiology and difficult doctor-patient relationships in primary care. He is now researching the impact of gender on health and has published a book on Men’s Health.
