Dr Rory McDaid

Rory is a research fellow with Growing Up in Ireland and is primarily involved in the qualitative aspect of the study.  Rory has a B.A. (Humanities) from St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, an MPhil. (International Peace Studies) from Trinity College, Dublin and a Higher Diploma in Education (H.D.E.) from the National University of Ireland, Galway.  He completed his Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.). in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra.  His thesis, entitled ‘Tears, Teachers, Tension and Transformation? Minority language children reflect on the  recognition of their first languages in Irish Primary Schools’ examined the feelings, experiences and understandings of a group of Polish and Romanian speaking children with regard to the recognition of their first languages in their primary schools. 

Rory has recently return to Ireland, having worked as an Education Trainer/Advisor with World Education in Thailand where he was primarily responsible for the design and delivery of a Teaching Skills Programme for Burmese refugees living in Umpheim Mai Refugee Camp.  Prior to this position, Rory worked as a Research Associate in the Special Education Department, St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra where he participated in two national research projects, and also as a part-time lecturer in the Education Department, in the same institution, where his work focused on Sociology of Education and Teaching and Learning in Minority Ethnic and Minority Language classrooms.  While working in St. Patrick’s, he co-organised a major national conference on the issue of minority ethnic and minority language children in Irish schools. 

From 2004-2007 Rory worked as an English Language Support Teacher in St Gabriel's N.S., Cowper Street, Dublin 7. Rory has held a voluntary position as Chairperson of the Advisory Group for the Schools Cultural Mediation Programme, a project in the D7 area which provided interpretation, translation and cultural mediation services to the 10 schools in the D7 School Completion Project Area, and has also volunteered with a number of organisations working with children in Belarus. He has served as the President of the Students’ Union in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, and as National Equality Officer with the Union of Students in Ireland.
